The national cervical screening programme
All of our nurses are fully trained in cervical screening. The national cervical screening programme offers all women aged 25 to 64 cervical screening every 5 years. Everyone with a cervix should be offered screening.
Two women in England will die from cervical cancer every day. Deaths that could’ve been prevented by early regular screening.
Nationally, the number of women attending cervical screening is at a twenty year low. In London one third of women are not going to their screening appointment.
It is strongly recommended that you take up this invite as it is a proven method of early detection of changes in the cervix which can go on to cause cervical cancer.

Declining Cervical Screening
Cervical screening (smear tests) plays an important role in preventing cervical cancer. We understand, however, that some patients may choose to decline screening.
If you decide not to attend for a cervical smear, there are specific steps you must follow to ensure your decision is correctly recorded.
What you need to do if you wish to decline
- Read the helping you decide leaflet found here: Helping you decide
- Complete the Cervical Screening Disclaimer Form this form confirms that you understand the benefits of screening and have chosen to decline at this time. Informed Consent for withdrawal from the Cervical Screening Programme
- Upload the completed form to the CSAS portal uploading the disclaimer to the CSAS (Cervical Screening Administration Service) portal ensures your decision is recorded at a national level. Screening – Cease / Opt-out – Patient
- Provide us with a copy In addition to uploading the form to CSAS, you must also: email a copy to: gpdirect@nhs.net
or bring a paper copy directly to the GP practice
Important information about future invitations
If you only upload the disclaimer form to the CSAS portal and do not provide a copy to the practice:
- You will not be invited via the national NHS cervical screening recall system.
- However, you may still be invited by the GP practice.
Providing a copy to us ensures that your medical records are fully updated and prevents unnecessary future invitations.
